Niger: Agricultural trade liberalization and women's rights

Study of the effects of trade liberalisation on women's rights in Niger. It is demonstrated that trade liberalisation exacerbates discrimination of women, because it forms a threat to food security in Niger, which has disproportionate effects on women.

The report explains the role that CEDAW can play in ensuring that trade commitments do not adversely impact women's rights and proposes that independent women's rights impact assessments of proposed trade rules - in particular the trade rules currently negotiated in the framework of the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) - should be carried out.
