Chop fine - The human rights impact of local government corruption and mismanagement in Rivers State, Nigeria
This study describes the human rights impacts of corruption in the Nigerian government, in particular at the local government level of the Rivers State in the Niger Delta. It analyses the impact of corruption on the enjoyment of human rights, specifically the rights to health and education – of which the fulfilment has been largely delegated to the local government.
After describing the background of the situation and the links between oil, governance, corruption and poverty in Nigeria, the report assesses the impacts of local government corruption on education and health care as well as access to information, linking these issues to Nigeria’s obligations under international human rights law. The report also contains three separate case studies that deal with the specific situation in the local governments of three regions within the Rivers State.
