The closing down of street prostitution areas in large cities in the Netherlands and the right to health
Case study in which the Health Rights for Women Assessment Instrument (HeRWAI) was tested. The test was on the closing down of street prostitution areas in large cities in the Netherlands and the right to health.
Several cities in the Netherlands have decided to close down the street prostitution areas in their municipality. The policies to close down street prostitution areas seem to be influenced by motives such as public orderand security and not because of concerns regarding well-being of the women working in these areas. The report fouses on two cities in the Netherlands: Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It investigates what the impact of these policies on the human rights of street prostitutes is, in particular as regards the right to health. In addition, it makes recommendations to the authorities in order to improve the effective guarantee of these rights.
