HRIA in Business

- (C) IRIN
Why carrying out an impact assessment on human rights is good for business?
There is a strong business case for developing and conducting human rights impact assessment, not only prior to investments, but also during business activities and after business projects have been finalised, including:
- Maintaining a good reputation,
- identifying and managing risks,
- improving stakeholder relations
- creating a license to operate
- Human rights impact assessments is a key to sustainable development
- and ensuring respect for human rights.
In his framework "Protect, Respect and Remedy" (2008) of the special representative of the United Nations for human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises, John Ruggie, has also emphasized that the corporate responsibility to respect human rights means carrying out "due diligence" . This process includes assessing actual and potential impacts on human rights of others.
Private enterprises leave physical and societal footprints. The activities of private enterprises have an impact on labour rights and the human rights of the broader community. These impacts extend to activities of relationships with third parties associated with the activities of the company. These impacts could be direct or indirect, and positive or negative.
Human Rights Impact Assessment is about anticipating, managing and responding to potential human rights challenges and opportunities. HRIA for private enterprises feeds the strategy and decision making processes within the management of a company. The results of a Human Rights Impact Assessment is the basis for adjustment of corporate policies and processes as well as stakeholder engagement.
