Building a Movement: Human Rights Impact Assessment and Women’s Rights, Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) caucus to be held 14 November 2008
During the AWID caucus Aim for human rights and its partners, will present their experience with the building and use of Human Rights Impact Assessment on women’s rights.
Many organisations are starting to work with or are interested in working with Human Rights standards. However, it can be difficult to do this in practice. How do you relate human rights back to the daily lives of people? And in particular women?
Human rights impact assessment (HRIA) is the new buzz word going round in civil society. In short, HRIA helps to measure the impact of policies, programs, projects and interventions on the human rights of people. HRIA helps civil society to adopt a rights based approach in their work and provides them with ammunition to hold their government to account for violating their Human Rights obligations.
Aim for human rights specializes in developing effective and efficient Human Rights Instruments together with its partners.
Working with HRIA instruments has not only enabled organisations to do solid analysis, but also creates cross boundary and cross country collaboration on women’s rights issues.
The key questions discussed during this caucus will be:
- How does HRIA relate to Women’s Rights?
- Looking critically at example an of HRIA on women’s health rights - HeRWAI – challenges, obstacles and successes when implementing HRIA.
- Looking ahead, continuation of building the movement: HRIA for any women’s issue?
