Human Security & business: Best Intentions Cannot Go Far Enough

This chapter illustrates the interconnectedness of severe human rights abuses in violent conflict with certain corporate practices, providing examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America. It also shows that voluntary initiatives are not sufficient to ensure that companies, particularly the ones in the extractive sector, focus on human rights in their work. Human rights impact assessments and conflict risk assessments are necessary in guiding corporate practices. A good example of this is International Alert's work in Colombia, in implementing 'Conflict Sensitive Business Practices: Guidance for the Extractive Sector (CSBP).'
