The Gender Mainstreaming Reference Toolkit (GMRK) is a resource document that must assist EMHRN and member organisations in mainstreaming gender in their policies, programmes and interventions. This toolkit must facilitate a process of internal discussion and ownership for gender mainstreaming as well as kick off for internal Gender Mainstreaming processes.

The GMRK objectives are to provide conceptual knowledge, practical tools and resources on gender mainstreaming. It facilitates guides and supports internal gender mainstreaming training initiatives. Thirdly this toolkit provides insights, resources and tools for mainstreaming gender within the policies, programmes and activities of human rights organisations.

This toolkit provides the explanation to the need to mainstream gender in human rights and other civil society organisations. The tools provided in this toolkit will help users in different sectors of their work. To use the tools provided in the GMRK a level of prescience on gender and tools is needed. The GMRK main purpose is to mainstream gender in human rights and to do this the GMRK will take the user through the stage required to properly embed and mainstream gender aware practices.

The GMRK starts with providing a clear definition and explanation on gender and what gender mainstreaming is about. It explains what gender analysis is and how to accomplish that. Gender mainstreaming faces key challenges, because current policies and programmes must be analysed to see how they affect females and males. Gender mainstreaming is about the analysis of gender relations. This analysis requires knowledge, tools and skills. That is why this toolkit not only offers tools to mainstream gender, but also offers several forms of training and knowledge based information.
