Considered the first human rights impact assessment case study for business. The human rights impact assessment of the BP natural gas development project in Indonesia was performed by Gare Smith (Foley Hoag Attorneys at Law) and Bennett Freeman (Consultant). A summary of recommendations and conclusion was published. BP prvided a written response to the human rights impact assessment.

The human rights impact assessment highlights a number of major human rights concerns and provides recommendations for dealing with them.

BP has formed an Independent Advisory Panel to advise on economic, political and social impacts of the project. This panel publishes yearly reports that include recommendations on dealing with human rights.
